Board restricts doctor charged in Ind. cop chase

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A Fort Wayne doctor’s medical license has been placed on indefinite probation after he was charged with leading police on a high-speed chase while on illegal drugs.

As part of a settlement with the Indiana attorney general’s office, Dr. Charles J. Whalen Jr. also isn’t allowed to prescribe controlled substances without permission from the state medical licensing board and must pay a $500 fine. The Journal Gazette reports that Whalen was released this month from an addiction center in Florida.

The board on Thursday lifted Whalen’s emergency suspension.

Whalen was charged in January with leading police on a chase along Interstate 69. Police say a blood test detected marijuana, methamphetamine and amphetamine.

He pleaded guilty and entered a program in which most of the charges will be dismissed.
