Apartment fire causes $100,000 damage in Naperville

Food left unattended on a stove apparently triggered an apartment fire Friday in Naperville that caused an estimated $100,000 damage, authorities said.

There were no injuries in the fire that was reported shortly after 1 p.m. by a resident at the complex on 1500 Fairway Drive.

The first crews were on the scene within a minute and found smoke in the apartment building’s stairway. Firefighters forced open the door to one of the units and discovered the fire in the kitchen.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes but remained on the scene for more than an hour.

The apartment where the fire started was deemed uninhabitable and will remain so until it can be refurbished, authorities said. Housing arrangements were made for the displaced residents.
