Lombard gets 'Train Town, USA' designation by Union Pacific Railroad

LOMBARD, Illinois-The Village of Lombard was recently designated as a "Train Town, USA" by the Union Pacific Railroad.

At the May 3, 2012 Lombard Board of Trustees meeting, Wesley Lujan, Director of Public Affairs, Northern Region, of the Union Pacific Railroad, presented the Village of Lombard with a metal sign designating Lombard as a "Train Town, USA."

In addition, Lujan presented the Village with a commemorative coin marking the Union Pacific Railroad's 150th anniversary, as well as a resolution recognizing the Village's partnership with Union Pacific.

"In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act which established and chartered the Union Pacific Railroad," said Lujan during the presentation at the Village Board meeting. "One of the things we want to do tonight is celebrate and recognize the Village of Lombard for the great spirit of cooperation and partnership we have with you by designating you as a 'Train Town, USA' which is basically states historical significance with the Union Pacific Railroad as we celebrate our 150th anniversary," Lujan added.

Lombard Village President, William Mueller, applied for the "Train Town, USA" designation with input from the Lombard Historical Society and Lombard resident, Carl Shaver. Shaver, a retired employee of the Union Pacific Railroad and historical expert on trains and the railroad, provided a local historical perspective on the impact of the railroad on Lombard.
