Espy delivers as Cougars rally in ninth

With the host Kane County Cougars down by a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Dean Espy capped a wild night with a walk-off, 3-run double in a 13-12 victory over the Burlington Bees on Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.

Espy bounced a 1-2 pitch down the third-base line past a diving B.A. Vollmuth as Lane Adams, Michael Antonio and Orlando Calixte all crossed the plate for the thrilling win.

Adams had reached to start the ninth on a passed ball after swinging through strike three against Jeff Urlaub (2-2). Antonio singled, and Calixte reached on an Urlaub error to fill the bases.

Antonio had given the Cougars (25-22) an early lead with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first inning against A.J. Cole, who allowed a dozen hits in 5 innings.

The Bees (20-26) scored 8 runs, 5 earned off starter Kellen Moen in 5 innings.

Calixte broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the fifth with his sixth homer of the season.
