The Suburbs This Weekend: Memorial Day, Monty Python and The Red Hot Chili Peppers

The resilient Red Hot Chili Peppers, Monty Python and a special Memorial Day remembrance are among the items selected by Sean Stangland and Richard Battin for The Suburbs This Weekend.

Two decades ago, The Red Hot Chili Peppers were known as an edgy (and often raunchy) band that mixed punk, funk, and psychedelic rock into a very danceable sound. Starting in the mid-1990s, though, the band became one of the standard-bearers for alternative rock, and in the process won an international following, Grammy Awards and a spot in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Though singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea and the other members are now well into middle age, the band still tries to live up to the anarchic, bass-slapping energy of the early days on stage. Sean recommends them. They'll be appearing at

7:30 p.m. Monday, May 28, at the Allstate Arena, 6920 N. Mannheim Road, Rosemont. $39.50 to $59.50. Go to ticketmaster.com.

Sean also recommends a remastered digital print of the hilarious comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” which be shown Friday, May 25, at midnight at the Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave., Downers Grove. Tickets go for a cheap $5. Go to classiccinema.com and pull down Tivoli on the theater menu.

For Memorial Day Richard suggests “Letters Home: A Memorial Day Remembrance,” at the Pheasant Run Resort and Convention Center, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles. Performed by Fox Valley Repertory with the Fox Valley Troop Support and Fox Valley Concert band the show is an annual tribute to the armed forces, featuring patriotic and original music, along with the reading of soldiers' letters to their family and friends, during their time of service. 8 p.m. Friday, May 25, and Saturday, May 26. Tickets are $20, or $10 for veterans. (630) 684-6342 or pheasantrun.com.
