Main St. construction hits gas line, road closed a few hours

LOMBARD, Illinois—A gas line was struck by the contractor during the construction work on south Main Street this morning, according to the Lombard Fire Department. While there was no immediate danger to residents or structures, a distinct odor and the closure of Main Street for a few hours caused inconveniences to area residents.

Main Street was closed to all traffic from 16th to 22nd Street while repairs to the gas line were made. The Lombard Fire Department reported that NICOR was contacted and the gas line was swiftly clamped off, mitigating the leak. “The public was not in any danger during this period of time,” said Lt. Brian Stuart of the Lombard Fire Department. “Area residents were inconvenienced due to the street closure but there was no need for evacuation,” he added.

Lombard Fire Department officials alerted nearby schools of the gas leak to make school officials aware of the odor. Students were kept indoors until the gas leak was stopped, according to Stuart.

Main Street was closed to all traffic for approximately two hours.
