Looking for adventure? Looking for athletics? Looking for arts and acting? Look to Elgin Academy’s “Summer at the Academy” for all of these.
International, national as well as local athletes, actors, actresses, musical performers and artists are headed to Elgin this summer to share their talents with students.
Throughout June and July, students will be able to learn and develop essential skills from professionals in athletic, performing art, science and adventure camps at Elgin Academy.
“Summer at the Academy,” created by and under the direction of Tanya Moore, is a new enrichment program offered at Elgin Academy.
For Elgin Academy and non-Elgin Academy students entering prekindergarten to 12th grade, it provides several different options and sessions for students. There will be four programs: Summer Arts Academy, Summer Athletics Academy, Summer Science Academy, and Adventure Camp.
For parents and students who are interested in a longer day at one of these camps, Summer Academy participants are able to register for extended day options: sunrise care and sunset care.
Summer Arts Academy features process-oriented classes led by professional actors, actresses, singers and musicians who bring a wealth of talent as well as numerous years of performance experience into a safe environment where students acquire a sense of accomplishment through creative experiences.
A sampling of classes is listed below. For a complete listing of all six classes, visit the website: www.elginacademy.org.
An Audition Skills Workshop highlights the talents of instructors with 30-plus years of experience in film, television, choreography and theater. They have performed on professional stages such as Drury Lane and the Paramount Theater and have television and film credits. They have appeared with actors/actresses that include Ben Vereen, Morgan Fairchild, David Letterman to name a few and on TV shows such as “General Hospital” and “Designing Women.”
A Midsummer Day’s Camp offers students a two-week camp with a classically trained Shakespearean actress who teaches students how energetic and exciting it is to act in Shakespeare plays. With a 20-year background in performance experience in everything from classical to musical and from improv to theater of the absurd, this actress and director will lead campers toward creating a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on the last day of camp.
“Lights, Camera, Action!” is a workshop designed to give students the confidence and keys to success for almost any performance setting. Led by an instructor who has worked in the entertainment industry for nine years as a singer, voice-over artist, commercial and improv actress in Los Angeles as well as a children’s acting and voice coach, students in this workshop will create a performance at the end of the camp.
These classes are offered along with several other classes and workshops in the Summer Arts Academy. More information about performing arts classes can be found at www.elginacademy.org or by contacting Tanya Moore, director of summer programs, at tmoore@elginacademy.org or (847) 695-0309, ext. 256.

Beginner and intermediate fencing students can participate in classes offered by Midwest Fencing Academy. Athletic instruction in basketball, field hockey, golf and volleyball camps is geared toward developing the essential skills, attitudes, and teamwork to be successful in athletics. A Strength & Conditioning Camp supplements a student athlete’s level of performance.
The Summer Science Academy is filling up fast! Students are active participants using problem solving, experimentation, and critical thinking skills in beginning and advanced robotics classes.
Adventure Camp, for children entering prekindergarten to fifth grade, offers four themed sessions: Creative Discovery, Time Travel Adventure, Global Explorers and Imagination Station.
