Springfield man arrested on cocaine charges in Elgin

A Cook County judge set bail at $75,000 for a Springfield man charged early Tuesday in connection with an Elgin Police Department drug surveillance operation.

Police charged Zachary Bramlett, 41, with possession of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony, and possession with intent to deliver, a Class X felony. If convicted of the most serious charge, Bramlett could face from six to 30 years in prison.

Undercover officers observed a car stopped in the roadway and conducted a traffic stop in the northbound lane of Beverly Road, north of Shoe Factory Road, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Lesley Gool during a bond hearing Tuesday morning before Judge Jill Cerone Marisie.

Police subsequently recovered from the car 91.7 grams of white powdery substance later determined to be cocaine and 29 grams of a white chunky substance later determined to be crack cocaine, Gool said.

Bramlett later told police he purchased the drugs for $3,000, Gool said.

Bramlett’s background includes misdemeanor convictions in 2008 and 1999 outside Cook County for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct respectively, Gool said. He was sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections following a 1992 conviction on charges of criminal drug conspiracy and on a 1992 conviction for aggravated battery.

Bramlett next appears in court June 18.
