Arlington Heights Senior Center Hosts National Senior Health & Fitness Day

On Wednesday, May 30, 2012, an estimated 100,000 older adults will participate in local fitness activities throughout the country as part of the 19th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day (NSHFD), the nation's largest health promotion event for older adults. One such event will be held at the Arlington Heights Senior Center between 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM.

Senior Health & Fitness Day will offer fitness activities for older adults at more than 1,000 locations including hospitals, park and recreation departments, senior centers, health clubs, retirement communities, houses of worship, health departments and other community locations. The event is always held on the last Wednesday in May as part of Older Americans Month activities.

"Older adults at all levels of physical fitness are encouraged to participate in National Senior Health & Fitness Day," says Patricia Henze, NSHFD program manager. "Our goals for Senior Day are to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program for older adults, and to encourage all older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered in their communities."

The Arlington Heights Senior Center's festivities kick off when the doors open at 8:30 AM for nationally-recognized entertainers, the Banjo Buddies Dixieland Trio. Complimentary breakfast snacks will be served until mid-morning and a wide variety of free services will be available, including hand and chair massages by Harper College Massage Therapy students, blood pressure and body weight analysis by Village of Arlington Heights nursing services, health & fitness web site demos in the computer lab by the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, BeMoved Dance Fitness demo by the Arlington Heights Park District, healthy fruit snack demo and a "How to Stay Healthy as You Age" panel presentation by Ric Saguil, MD, Tom Jordon, MS RD, and Michael Richards, NASMCPT. Cholesterol screenings will be offered at a half price fee of $10 between 8:30-11:30 AM. Several prize baskets will be given away at the closing ceremony slated for 12:30 PM. To enter the drawing, attendees may obtain free tickets by visiting a variety of offerings throughout the day.

The event is open to all. No reservations needed.
