Attorneys and legal activists are offering suggestions on how to correct the problem of wrongful prosecutions in Lake County. The ideas include additional training for prosecutors and working to get judges to allow expert testimony on false confessions. A 92-year-old man died early Sunday morning after he was unable to escape a fire that swept through his single-story home in Hoffman Estates overnight. Emmett Keating was pronounced dead after Hoffman Estates firefighters pulled him from a bedroom of his burning residence in the 700 block of Cumberland Street. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Pet shop fire kills numerous animals</h3>

Snakes, hamsters, fish, birds and several other animals perished early Sunday morning when a massive fire tore through a Beach Park pet store, authorities said. Firefighters were called at 6:06 a.m. to the Happyland Pet Center, 11432 Wadsworth Road, for a report of a fire in the two-story building that housed the business and second-level apartments. Google says authorities in China have approved its acquisition of Libertyville-based Motorola Mobility. This brings the Internet search giant closer to completing its biggest deal ever. Google Inc. is buying the mobile phone maker for $12.5 billion. The Chinese government approved the deal on Saturday, Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said. Within a matter of months, students at Conant High School successfully converted a gasoline go-cart into an award-winning electric vehicle.
