Police: Elgin man tried to rape girl, 10, then her adult cousin who stopped assault

An Elgin man is accused of trying to rape a 10-year-old, and when the girl's adult cousin saw it and stopped it he raped her at knife point after she refused $500 in hush money to not call police on him.

Jesus E. Hernandez, 38, of the 300 block of McClure Court, is due in court on June 1 and faces up to 30 years in prison.

According to court records, Hernandez is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon, criminal sexual assault, attempted predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim younger than 13, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim younger than 13.

He was arrested and charged Thursday by Elgin Police; his bail amount was not immediately available.

According to an Elgin police report:

A 21-year-old woman, her two kids and three cousins, all younger than 10, went to visit Hernandez in his one-bedroom apartment on Wednesday.

The woman put her two kids and two of her cousins to bed in the bedroom while Hernandez was one the couch in the main room and the 10-year-old was on the floor. The woman later went to bed in the bedroom, but awoke to find Hernandez trying to assault the girl.

Hernandez, according to police, offered the woman $500 to not call the police on him, but she refused. According to the report, Hernandez said if he was going to go to prison for raping one person, he might as well rape two and he assaulted her at knife point. The woman called police after Hernandez went to bed.
