Elk Grove student consults for Coupon Cabin in NIU class

The consulting project was conducted through the Experiential Learning Center in the NIU College of Business. For the last decade, teams operating out of the ELC have been “hired” by companies looking for fresh insight into a business issue. Companies such as Caterpillar, Wal-Mart and McDonalds have each used multiple ELC teams over the past decade.

The projects allow students, who are drawn from departments throughout the college and across the university, to apply concepts that they are learning in the classroom to actual business challenges. Along the way, they also learn lessons about team work, leadership, researching, presentation skills and more.

Gorman, a marketing major, and his team, conducted focus groups, surveys and primary and secondary research to identify emerging mobile trends in the mobile couponing industry and devised a comprehensive marketing strategy to increase brand awareness and improve the image of Coupon Cabin.

The team presented their findings to executives from Coupon Cabin on May 7, 2012. Coupon Cabin offers over 100,000 coupon codes, grocery coupons, printable coupons, free samples and product deals. Coupon Cabin continually verifies their coupons on a daily basis in order to guarantee that each coupon works every time. They are the second leading couponing company.

About 50 students participate in ELC projects each year gaining real world experience and a unique experience to place on their resume.
