Police: Stranger asked D300 child if she wanted a ride

Community Unit Community Unit District 300 officials sent a letter home to parents as a precaution after a 9-year-old girl reported that a stranger asked if she wanted a ride Wednesday morning.

Algonquin police responded after the girl ran to her school near the intersection of Grandview Court and Huntington Drive and reported the incident to a school employee.

A man stepped out of his vehicle near the intersection and asked her if she needed a ride, according to police.

The white male had a gray and black beard, glasses and was wearing a dark blue baseball cap with something white on the front, according to police.

He was driving a black four-door vehicle, police said.

Police have increased patrols in the area and the investigation is ongoing. Algonquin police are encouraging the community to be alert and said the girl responded appropriately.

Police are encouraging parents to review their safety plan with their children and to remind their children not to get in a vehicle with an adult who is not their parent unless it is part of the safety plan.
