Auditions set for ‘Taming of the Shrew’ in Batavia

Submitted by Shakespeare on Clark

In its 14th season, Shakespeare on Clark will present “The Taming of the Shrew” this summer in downtown Batavia. The production will take place weekends July 27-Aug. 12 outdoor on Clark Island.

“The Taming of the Shrew” is one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, featuring the tumultuous love story of Kate and Petruchio. Baptista, father to Kate and the lovely Bianca, declares his younger daughter is not allowed to marry, until his oldest has been wed. Suitors to Bianca join forces to find the one brave soul who is willing to tackle the task of taming the shrewish Kate.

The show requires a cast of at least 16 actors ranging from late teens to any age. All roles are available, and all actors will receive a stipend for their efforts.

The auditions for this production will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20. Call backs will be scheduled if necessary. This is an open audition, no appointments are necessary. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. A complete list of character, the synopsis of the show, and the cutting from the script to be used during auditions can be found at www.jesterscourtyard.com under the “Shakespeare on Clark” tab. Anyone who is interested in participating, but unavailable on the audition dates may schedule a private or Skype audition by calling the director, Julane Sullivan, at (630) 879-5130.

The auditions will be held in the Jesters Courtyard, inside All Dressed Up Costumes. All Dressed Up Costumes is in the Campana Building on the northwest corner of Route 31 and Fabyan Parkway, 901 N. Batavia Ave. in Batavia.

Sponsored in part by Batavia Main Street, the Batavia Arts Council, the Batavia Park District and All Dressed Up Costumes, Shakespeare on Clark has been a much loved summer activity for the past 13 summers. Each year, hundreds file across the bridges leading to Clark Island nightly, to enjoy a summer picnic on the lawns and an understandable production of a Shakespeare Comedy.

This summer, there will be one additional performance, on Wednesday, Aug. 8, in Lilac Park, Lombard, sponsored by the Lombard Main Street program.
