Police still investigating slaying near Arlington Heights

Cook County Sheriff's police continue to investigate the weekend shooting of a 34-year-old man at a Wheeling Township apartment complex, but as of Tuesday had no one in custody in connection with the slaying.

Abel Oliva, who both lived and worked at the Whispering Winds apartment complex just southeast of Route 53 and Lake-Cook Road near Arlington Heights, was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds suffered there sometime Saturday morning.

Police Sunday said they were seeking a "person of interest," but did not identify or describe the person, or indicate the person's possible role in the murder.

"Investigators are still working hard on the case," Cook County Sheriff's spokesman Frank Bilecki said Tuesday. "They are continuing to follow leads and gather information."

Oliva, who was married with children, worked in maintenance at the apartment complex, according to a property manager. Neighbors described Oliva as a friendly, gentle family man who would have been 20 minutes into his maintenance work shift at the time of the shooting.
