New owner takes over Downers Grove salon
An interview with Tara Engstrom, owner of Salon Sophia in Downers Grove.
Q: Describe your business. What do you do?
A: We are a full service salon and day spa. We specialize in color. We love weddings. We also do hair extensions and Keratin straightening treatments. Salon Sophia is an AVEDA concept salon.
Q: What made you start your business?
A: I’ve been in the business for more than 18 years and I love it. It’s my passion and I want that to extend to our staff and clients.
Q: What has been the most difficult obstacle in running or starting a small business?
A: The most difficult part is hiring the right staff and doing all the paperwork required for a new business.
Q: What do you enjoy most about operating your business?
A: I enjoy seeing people leave happy. Teaching the staff how to go that extra mile and always do your best are other aspects I enjoy.
Q: Is this what you pictured yourself doing when you were young?
A: Yes, I have been doing this since high school. I love my kids and my work.
Q: What keeps you up at night?
A: My kids and making business decisions.
Q: If you could give one tip to a rookie business owner, what would it be?
A: My tips are to get a good partner, be prepared and do your due diligence if buying an existing business.
Q: What else do you do at your business that people would like to know?
A: We give free consultations. We always take care of clients who refer new business. We are always hiring top stylists who team players and who have clientele in the area. We like charity events and fund raisers.
