Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee Honors Civil War Veterans at Forest Hill Cemetery

Serving on the Glen Ellyn Historical Society Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee are Douglas Ward, Norma Burgeson, Kurt Carlson, Richard Eichen, Louis HoornBeek, William Hupp, Martha Oczkowski, Jane Rio, and Suzanne Carty. They have been meeting for a year and are planning activities to bring the Civil War to the attention of Village residents over the next three years. To honor Danby's Civil War veterans who are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery on Riford Road and St. Charles Road, the committee is preparing flags with red, white and blue ribbons to mark the graves. They will be putting the flags in place on Wednesday, May 23 at 10:00 A.M.

Glen Ellyn began celebrating Memorial Day in the late 1800s, with leadership by members of the E.S. Kelly Chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). Glen Ellyn's Memorial Park was established in 1926. Memorial Day now is celebrated in Lake Ellyn Park at the current veteran's memorial. For information call 630-469-1867.
