The Hammons family of Arlington Heights will be homeless by Wednesday unless they can find an apartment or house to rent big enough to hold three adults, six children and a dog. And when the average size of a homeless family in Cook County is three people, experts are telling them their odds of finding a place with at least three bedrooms are bad. "We're praying there is someone in the Northwest suburbs that will take a chance on them," said Pastor Rich Weller of the Northwest Assembly of God Church in Mount Prospect, which is collecting money for them to pay rent once they land a place. A varsity athlete while growing up in Westmont, Patti Saltiel slowly lost her physical fitness and saw her weight climb to 188 pounds during the years as a mom with four kids. On New Year's Day of 2011, Saltiel knew she should resolve to get back in shape when she got the news that sister had dropped dead. For the first time in its 80-year history, the prestigious Ryder Cup golf tournament will come to suburban Medinah Country Club. About 40,000 fans are expected at each day of the September games, and many will trumpet our local coup. Softball and food were two of Gloria Capek's favorite things. After the mother of five died of breast cancer in 1999, at age 64, her family created a charity softball tournament in her memory that includes a large buffet of food. Now in its 11th year, the event has raised more than $60,000 for local breast cancer charities. "She would have just absolutely loved this," said her daughter, Deb Boylan, 54 of Vernon Hills. A man who operates reactors at a nuclear power plant was "thrill seeking" when he put on a mask and hijacked a woman's car at gunpoint, DuPage County authorities said Friday. A man in his 40s was shot dead in the parking lot of a Des Plaines strip mall Sunday afternoon, officials confirmed. Des Plaines Police and Illinois State police remained at the scene in the 1900 block of East Touhy for hours after the shooting, which occured at about 3:15 p.m. Full story.
