Honoring mothers for their sacrifices

Much in the news these days has been the discussion of stay-at-home mothers. Nothing in my 39 years within the struggle for life and family has angered me more than unprovoked attacks on these earthly saints — mothers who make their choice, often with great sacrifice, in order to give God-fearing and productive citizens to our country.

How dare the vocal left attack mothers for making their informed choice, a choice that results in ensuring the continuation of the true strength of our nation, the family unit. Special indeed is a mother who will sacrifice what some call her own personal good for the children she brings into our world. It is God’s plan for continuing his children from generation to generation. Is this not far more important and meaningful to our society than yet another CEO, attorney or physician?

On this Mother’s Day, when we honor these special moms, let us remember the providential words of the late Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty, who eloquently stated, “The most important person on earth is a mother ... She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral — a dwelling place for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body.”

The good cardinal got this one right. It is the mother who joins forces with God in performing the very act of creation. It is she who nourishes and then delivers the greatest gift any of us will ever have, our very lives. The cardinal ended his praise with, “What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother.”

Congratulations to all our mothers. May God bless you in the special way you deserve.
