Infant twins’ deaths still a mystery

The cause of death of 5-month-old twins found in their Chicago home is still a mystery following autopsies Friday.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office says further test results are needed.

Chicago police say the babies, Julian and Giselle Romero, were found Thursday unresponsive in their crib by their mother.

Officials of the Department of Children and Family Services say they are also looking into the deaths, saying they were already investigating allegations of neglect.

DCFS spokesman Jimmie Whitelow says the agency has been in contact with the family since March 2011. That is when the agency determined an allegation of abuse involving an older child was credible.

Whitelow said last month, the agency began an investigation into an allegation of neglect of the babies by the parents.
