Illinois Walgreen clinic nurses approve contract

Nurse practitioners at clinics in Walgreen drug stores in Illinois have approved a three-year contract offer.

The Illinois Nurses Association announced the agreement Wednesday. The contract calls for salary increases of 8.6 percent for Chicago nurses and 9.3 percent for Peoria nurses the first year. Salaries increase 2.6 percent in the second and third years.

The nurse practitioners at Walgreen Take Care clinics voted a year ago to form a union.

Take Care nurse practitioners treat patients for common illnesses such as strep throat, ear and sinus infections, pink eye and poison ivy. They can write prescriptions that can be filled at a patient's pharmacy of choice.

The nurse practitioners also provide school, sports and camp physicals and offer vaccinations for flu, hepatitis B, meningitis and tetanus.
