Batavia fireworks committee seeks donations

It was a win some, lose some weekend for fundraising for the Batavia Fireworks Committee.

On the one hand, more sellers than ever registered for the Communitywide Garage Sale held May 4 and 5. Registration fees from the sellers go to the fund.

But Sunday’s thunderstorms washed out another opportunity. The committee usually has volunteers walk along the route of the Loyalty Day parade, collecting donations from the crowd. It usually gets at least $1,000 that way.

But the parade was canceled due to concern about lightning.

So Alderman Susan Stark made a plea during the city council meeting Monday, which will be televised on cable station BATV and the Internet, for donations. The July 4 fireworks show is funded by donations; the city picks up the bill for police and fire protection at the event.

You can donate through the fireworks website, bataviafireworks.org/555.htm, or send a check to the committee at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia, IL 60510.

The show is at 9:30 p.m. Guests can watch from Engstrom Family Park at Millview Drive and Main Street, or from the athletic fields at Batavia High School, 1201 W. Main St.
