Lacrosse success is in the Handrahan blood
One has brown hair and green eyes.
The other, blond hair and blues eyes.
The Handrahan sisters may not look alike.
But they sure have their similar traits on the lacrosse field.
Both can dominate the field statistically as well as use impressive ballhandling. They can shoot or cradle the ball either left or right-footed and they can play offense or defense.
The brown-haired Mary is the only player from Lake Zurich High School to play competitive NCAA lacrosse.
She just finished her career at Carthage College two weeks ago.
The blonde-haired Emily will now follow in her sisters footsteps, also playing NCAA lacrosse.
Emily, who will graduate from Lake Zurich High School in a few weeks, has committed to Augustana College in Rock Island.
A starting midfielder at Carthage, Mary scored 1 goal when Carthage lost to top-seeded Adrian in the title game of the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference tournament at Adrian Multisport Performance Stadium.
Mary also had 3 groundballs, 1 draw control and 1 caused turnover.
For the season, she scored 14 goals and had 9 assists.
Baseball
North Park junior Nick Soldano of Lake Zurich (Zion-Benton High School) was named a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Baseball player of the week.
Soldano, a junior pitcher, pitched all nine innings and picked up the win in a 5-4 victory over North Central to clinch the Vikings’ first outright CCIW regular season title since 1990.
He scattered 7 hits, gave up only 2 earned runs, struck out 11 and walked only one to move to 8-1 on the season. He improved his strikeout total to a team-best 86.
Football
Senior Mike Etchingham (Prospect) will play for Augustana. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound linebacker, offensive tackle and running back helped Prospect to Class 7A playoff appearances two years in a row and was an all-conference selection.
Ÿ Indiana’s Teddy Schell (Barrington) was named a member of the 2012 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career.
Men’s lacrosse
Fremd senior midfielder Nathan Serviss, a three-year varsity performer, who scored his 100th goal against Conant last week, has received an athletic scholarship to play lacrosse at Adelphi University.
The 6-foot-4 Serviss also started on Fremd’s varsity basketball team this winter.
Ÿ Fremd’s Jon Bryk will continue his career at Augustana. An attacker and midfielder, he was a second team Mid-Suburban League all-conference selection as a junior. He is tied for the Fremd team lead with 17 assists through the first 14 games this season and also has 12 goals and 40 ground balls.
