The Suburbs This Weekend: Bird watching, Bach, Daughtry and suburban talent
Bird watching, Daughtry, suburban talent and Sebastian Bach are among the recommendations by Sean Stangland and Richard Battin in this weeks' The Suburbs This Weekend.
In a musical mood, Sean offers up The band Daughtry (featuring its “American Idol” finalist frontman Chris Daughtry) which performs with opening act Safetysuit Friday at the Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan. $42.50-$52.50. (847) 782-2366 or geneseetheatre.com. 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 11.
Sean also suggests Sebastian Bach, the Canadian heavy metal singer who achieved mainstream success as frontman of Skid Row from 1987 to 1996. Bach will be at Cubby Bear North, 21661 N. Milwaukee Ave., Lincolnshire: Sebastian Bach, 9 p.m. Saturday, May 12 ($17-$20). (847) 541-4700 or cubbynorth.com.
On a quieter note, Richard recommends a morning of bird-related activities for all ages at the International Migratory Bird Day Celebration at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center, 525 S. Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn. Highlights include bird walks for adults, kids and beginning bird watchers, a bird-banding demonstration and a special kids' activity station. Bring your binoculars to scan the skies for feathered friends like cardinals, blue jays, Baltimore orioles and many others. A limited number of binoculars will be available. Free admission. No reservations required. (630) 933-7200 or willowbrookwildlife.org. 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12
And while it's not this weekend, Richard suggests that all the talented suburbanites out there start practicing for the Suburban Chicago's Got Talent competition .
Talented amateurs in singing, dancing, juggling or other performing arts can register for one of up to 300 audition spots to appear at the first round of the summer-long contest. These auditions are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, June 7-9, at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre at 111 W. Campbell St., Arlington Heights. There is an entry fee of $5 for a solo act, and $10 for a group act (cash only).
Suburban Chicago's Got Talent is jointly sponsored by the Metropolis, the Daily Herald and the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce. The top five finalists will perform as part of the Taste of Arlington Heights, while the winner will have an expenses-paid trip to audition for a future season of “America's Got Talent.”
