Three men charged after Waukegan shooting that wounded one
Three men have been arrested and charged in what Waukegan police say was a gang-related shooting near a park that wounded one person.
Kevin Apaez, 18, of Waukegan, Michael Ingersoll, 22, of Zion, and Orlando Reyes, 20, of Waukegan, have been charged in the May 1 shooting at Catalpa Street and Washington Park, Sgt. Gabe Guzman said. They were arrested Thursday, May 3.
Apaez was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member, unlawful use of a weapon within 1,000 feet of a school, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and resisting arrest, Guzman said.
Ingersoll was charged with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, resisting arrest, and driving on a revoked license, Guzman said. Reyes was charged with armed violence, aggravated battery of a firearm, and two counts of aggravated battery.
Police were called to Catalpa and Washington Park about noon May 1, where they found the victim shot in the stomach. The unidentified victim was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where his condition is unknown, Guzman said.
On May 3, officers spotted Apaez and Ingersoll in a vehicle near Orchard and Catalpa and stopped it, Guzman said. Both men, Guzman said are known gang members, fled on foot.
The two were arrested following a short chase. Apaez was carrying the 9 mm semiautomatic handgun used in the May 1 shooting, Guzman said.
Patrol officers later saw Reyes in the vehicle used in that shooting and stopped it. Reyes was driving the vehicle during the May 1 shooting, Guzman said.
"I am very proud of all of the police personnel who were involved in this case, especially the Gang Intelligence Unit officers," Police Chief Daniel Greathouse said. "This is the third gun in as many days that we have taken off the streets. This senseless gang violence must stop."
All three men are in Lake County jail. Bond and follow up court dates are unknown at this time, Guzman said.
