Kane County Cougars clipped by couple of homers

BELOIT, Wis. — Back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the third inning helped lift the Beloit Snappers to a 5-3 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field.

Rory Rhodes connected with the first Beloit (17-13) blast off Aaron Brooks (2-4) as he crushed a ball just to the left of straightaway center. Tyler Grimes followed with a drive down the left-field line to put the Snappers ahead by 2.

Brooks only allowed those 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings. He struck out nine, including five straight at one point.

Jason Wheeler (4-0) kept the Cougars (14-16) off the board through 6 innings while allowing 5 hits.

The Cougars finally advanced a runner to third in the eighth inning when Henry Moreno doubled home Lane Adams and Orlando Calixte, cutting the Snappers’ lead to 4-2.

The Snappers had tacked on a couple runs in the seventh off Malcolm Culver and one in the eighth against Robinson Yambati. Rhodes added an RBI single while Grimes scored on an Edul Escobar throwing error. Miguel Sano’s sacrifice fly in the eighth made it 5-2.

The Cougars’ Jorge Bonifacio singled across Runey Davis in the ninth inning but was stranded at second to end the game.
