True win-win involves kids

I am writing briefly to answer your question in this past Saturday’s Soapbox, “Win-win for Kane-DuPage:”

Kane County says its housing of DuPage County’s juvenile offenders is working out well. Kane County is receiving about $110 per day per juvenile compared to the $357 per juvenile DuPage would have spent to house its own. Kane makes money, DuPage saves money. What’s not to like?

What’s not to like? This win-win includes no reflection on positive outcomes for children. When the win is only for bureaucracy, without consideration for best outcomes for the people, we all lose.

If there are good outcomes for children in the partnership between counties, please report them. Until then, let’s hold off on a celebration until we know we really have something to celebrate.
