Warren-Newport library donation
Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee has received a $15,000 donation that’ll be used for a rain garden soon to be built just east of the main entrance. Officials said Leslie Pencak of the Button Room Museum in Gurnee made the donation. They said $10,000 came from the estate of Elizabeth “Peg” Hewitt and $5,000 from the Button Room. The garden will be dedicated to the memory of Hewitt, a longtime Gurnee resident whose collection of vintage and antique buttons from around the world was used to establish the museum. “It is appropriate to honor such an important figure in Gurnee’s history,” said library director Stephen Bero. “Leslie shared with us what a fondness Peg had for the library just down the street from her home. We will honor her legacy and look forward to a rich partnership with the Button Room.” Pencak said Hewitt’s daily walk to the library to check out books was one of her favorite things to do.
