Your news Poet Jo Stewart to lead poetry workshop May 12

The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop will be from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 12, led by Jo Stewart. Saturday’s topic will be “How to Read a Poem.”

Participants will review some elemental ways of entering the experience of the poem. Often people ask, “But what does the poem mean?” The workshop will review some clues to look for in order to have an aesthetic experiences from hearing or reading poetry.

Jo Stewart retired several years ago as regional director for the Chicago Department on Aging. She’s facilitated over 20 memoir writing workshops in the last eight years. Stewart started her professional career as a reporter for the Southtown Economist, but poetry has always been her first love. Her poetry has been published by Modern Bride Magazine, the Blue Collar Review, various academic magazines and The Journal, a publication of the Northwestern University Life Long Learning program and one for which she has served as associate editor for three years. Her academic career and education spanned 22 years, eight children and four institutions.

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N.
