Elgin Lions offer Diabetes Awareness Day May 5
The Elgin Lions Club has a busy May schedule.
In addition to the hearing screenings at the Gail Borden Library on Tuesday, May 15, the club will conduct Diabetes Awareness Day at the Jewel/Osco on Larkin Avenue on Saturday, May 5 in an effort to support research into coping with the disease that is becoming more and more prevalent today.
On Saturday, May 19, the club will conduct ALS Awareness Day at the same location. So far, there has been little headway into combating this very debilitating and eventually fatal affliction, and the club is trying to get out the message of the seriousness of the affliction.
On Saturday, May 26, the club will pass out water during the annual Elgin Fox Trot while club president Ed Bates participates in the race.
The members recently helped beautify Lords Park by helping in the planting of grass and ornamentals. The club's annual Rose Day Sale in late April contributed enough money to provide around 100 vision exams and pairs of glasses to children in Elgin Area School District U-46 and others. The nurses in the district were responsible for a large number of those sold roses and the club is very grateful for their contribution.
New members are always welcome. The club meets at the Elgin Holiday Inn on the first Tuesday of every month except July and August. For details, call the club at (847) 289-4206.
