Barrington resident brings expertise in cancer care to Loyola
Barrington resident Carol Bier-Laning, MD, brings her expertise in the treatment of head and neck cancer and transoral robotic surgery to Loyola University Health System. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
She is an integral part of a clinic at Loyola's Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center that offers treatment options to people diagnosed with head and neck cancer. This includes transoral robotic surgery, which is less invasive and can be used to remove benign and some malignant tumors in adults who have head or neck cancer.
Most recently, Bier-Laning was the Otolaryngology Section Chief at Edward Hines, Jr., VA Hospital. She earned her medical degree from the University of Colorado and completed her residencies in general surgery and otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota. She completed a fellowship in head and neck surgery as well as a research fellowship at the Ohio State University.
She has received numerous grants and served as principal investigator for several cutting-edge research initiatives in relation to head and neck cancer treatments. She has been widely published in medical journals and has served as a reviewer for the Archives of Otolaryngology, Laryngoscope and Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
She is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American Head and Neck Society and the Chicago Laryngological and Otological Society.
She is a sought-after teacher, lecturer and speaker.
She was the director of the Peter J. Girgis Annual Otolaryngology Resident Research Competition which played a role in Loyola medical residents being recognized in the Chicago area as excelling in otolaryngology research presentations.
