Dundee-Crown announces Hall of Fame class
One former and one current coach, three former athletes and one team will be inducted into the Dundee-Crown Athletic Hall of Fame as the Class of 2012 on Sept. 15, it was announced Wednesday night.
Former swimming coach Mike Cain, who started the swimming program at Dundee High School in 1975 and coached the sport for over 30 years, as well as longtime Crown High School and Dundee-Crown cross country and track coach Tom Smith will each be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year.
Former athletes Steve Gillie, George Scott and Patrick Sullivan will join the hall as will the 1946 Dundee High boys basketball team.
Best known as a swimming coach, Cain also coached football, softball, basketball, softball, track and wrestling in a Dundee and Dundee-Crown career that spanned 40 years. A graduate of Northwest Missouri State, he coached numerous state qualifiers and conference champions in swimming and track. Cain is also the founder of the Dundee Township Park District Dundee Dolphins swim team.
Smith became Crown’s cross country and track coach in 1980 and when Dundee and Crown merged in 1983, he continued in both roles, which he maintains today. Smith’s teams have won a combined 10 Fox Valley Conference championships, 12 regional titles and have qualified for state three times. He has had numerous state qualifiers in cross country and track. He was also an assistant varsity girls basketball coach for 14 years.
Gillie is a 2002 D-C graduate, was a three-time all-conference golfer who won a regional title in 2001, was a three-time sectional qualifier, and owns the D-C 18-hole school record. He also holds the 18-hole record at Carthage College, where he was CCIW all-conference, academic all-conference, a team MVP and captain all four years. He is currently the head pro at Randall Oaks and is a three-time Illinois Open qualifier.
Scott is a 1984 graduate who was a three-time state track qualifier in the sprints, a two-time track MVP and an all-stater in the sport in 1984. He still holds the school record in the 400 meters. He was also a two-time all-conference and all-area football player who attended training camp with the San Diego Chargers.
A 2004 graduate, Sullivan was a three-time high school swimming all-American. He holds six school records and went on to swim at Southern Illinois University, where he was a team captain. A three-time state qualifier, Sullivan finished second in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 free his senior year.
