Ultimate Gymnastics celebrates 'banner year' with 23 titles
It's official: 2011-12 has been a record-breaking season for the girls' team at Ultimate Gymnastics. With all state meets complete, the Gurnee-based club can claim an impressive 23 state champions, easily surpassing the club's old record of 18, set in the 2009-10 season.
“I am so proud of our gymnasts, our coaches and our parents,” said Shane Sanders, head coach of the girls' team program. “This was a banner year for Ultimate Gymnastics and the hard work and dedication exhibited by everyone truly made for our most successful season.”
The old club record certainly looked within reach before the Level 5 team stepped up to compete. The Level 6 and 7 girls had started strong with 10 titles at their state meet and the Levels 8, 9 and 10 girls had claimed another five. The Level 5 team certainly rose to the challenge adding a total of eight more state titles, across all four events.
The weekend's outstanding performance went to Olivia Roebuck, in the Youth B age group. She not only won gold on floor exercise (9.65) but also in the all-around (37.75), the gym's first Level 5 state all-around champ. Olivia also added two bronze medals, on vault and balance beam.
Right alongside Olivia in the all-around was Zion's Gracie Gnatt who placed second, scoring 37.45. She had a consistent meet across all four events, scoring no lower than a 9.10. But the highlight was undoubtedly her first-place finish on balance beam (9.60).
Also having a standout meet was Sabrina Panlaqui in the Junior A age group. She came away with two state gold medals: on uneven bars (9.50) and floor exercise (9.475). She also placed third on beam and in the all-around.
In the Senior D age group, Delaney Jones won her state gold on vault and, in doing so, claimed another first — she is Ultimate's first state vault champion at Level 5. She also placed third on floor and second in the all-around.
In the Youth A age group, another Ultimate gymnast had a state-winning performance on floor. Emily Isabelli scored 9.525 to claim the top spot on the podium and also won silver on vault and bronze in the all-around. Meanwhile, completing what has been a very successful season, Lindenhurst's Riley Finnegan scored an impressive 9.675 to win the state title on balance beam in the Junior C age group.
In the team competition, the Youth division placed second, scoring 112.600, while the Junior division came in fifth. Overall the Ultimate team finished fourth in the state.
