White Sox not enjoying advantage at the Cell

The White Sox used to be one the best home teams in baseball.

From 2000 to 2010, the Sox had just one losing record at Comiskey Park/U.S. Cellular Field. That was in 2007, when the White Sox went 38-43 while losing 90 games overall.

Last year, the Sox were 36-45 at the Cell, and following Saturday night’s 1-0 loss to Boston, the White Sox are 3-7 at home.

Much like old manager Ozzie Guillen, new manager Robin Ventura is at a loss to explain all the home losses.

“In’93, I believe we were better on the road than we were at home,” Ventura said. “There could be a bunch of different reasons for it. I don’t know exactly what it is. I don’t think anybody here just automatically thinks we can’t win at home and we’re only going to win on the road. You just play, but some teams are just better that way.”

In 1993, the White Sox were better on the road at 49-32. But they were still pretty good at Comiskey Park, going 45-36.

Complete package:

Jake Peavy has thrown back-to-back complete games for the first time in his career.

Mark Buehrle was the last Sox pitcher to accomplish the feat, in 2010.

Living large:

After the White Sox traded Jim Thome to the Dodgers late in the 2009 season, they said a job would be waiting for the popular designated hitter when his playing days end.

Thome, 41, is playing for the Phillies this year, but he’s been battling back spasms again as doesn’t figure to play beyond this season.

If Thome does accept a position with the Sox, he’ll have a place to live.

According to Chicago Real Estate Daily, Thome recently purchased a $4.6 million mansion in southwest suburban Burr Ridge.

Thome is also trying to sell his old home in Hinsdale, which is listed for $3.8 million.

Minor matters:

Dan Johnson put up some big numbers Saturday as Class AAA Charlotte split a doubleheader with Syracuse.

Johnson was a combined 4-for-6 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI. He hit a grand slam in Game 2.

For the season, Johnson is batting .303 with 3 homers and 17 RBI.

On Friday night, Class A Kannapolis second baseman Ross Wilson hit 3 home runs and drove in 8 runs against Augusta.

Wilson, who played college baseball at Alabama, was a 10th-round draft pick in 2010.
