Lansing sweeps past Kane County Cougars, 4-2
LANSING, Mich. — Despite a ninth-inning threat, the Kane County Cougars suffered a three-game sweep in a 4-2 loss Friday to the Lansing Lugnuts at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Danny Mateo started the ninth inning for the Cougars (10-12) by walking, and Michael Antonio reached with a single. After Jorge Bonifacio struck out, Lane Adams reached on an error to load the bases against Ajay Meyer.
Meyer rebounded to strike out Orlando Calixte, but Tim Ferguson drew a walk to score Mateo. With the tying and go-ahead runs aboard, pinch hitter Murray Watts laced a liner to left that Kevin Pillar ran down to end the game and give Meyer his eighth save of the season.
Lansing (17-5) grabbed the early advantage for the third straight contest as K.C. Hobson smashed his second home run of the season, leading off the second against Edwin Carl (1-2). Carl also surrendered a solo shot to Andy Burns with two outs in the second to put the Lugnuts up by two.
Those would be the only runs allowed by Carl, who lasted six innings. David Rollins (2-0) worked five for the Lugnuts and gave up just one run as Henry Moreno doubled home Ferguson in the fifth.
Nick Graffeo pitched the final two frames for the Cougars and gave up two runs, but just one earned.
The Cougars remain on the road Saturday afternoon when they take on the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond with a 1:05 first pitch. Right-hander Kellen Moen (0-1) starts for the Cougars against southpaw Matt Laney (0-1).
The Cougars return home for more Midwest League baseball action on Wednesday to battle the Peoria Chiefs at 6 p.m.
