Elgin
Ÿ Matthew R. Toole, 22, a homeless man living in Elgin, was arrested on charges that he committed arson by setting a plastic garbage cart on fire, police said. Reports said the fire occurred March 15 behind the Butera grocery store in the 0-99 block of Clock Tower Plaza. Toole started it by lighting plastic bags on fire, police said. He also told police he did so because he was bored and that he also stood by and watched as firefighters battled the flames, reports said. His bail was set Thursday morning at $150,000, which means he needs $15,000 to get out of jail while his case moves through the courts. Arson is a Class 2 felony and if found guilty of the charge, Toole could spend between three and seven years in prison.
Ÿ Three white trailers were reported stolen early Wednesday morning. Police say they were parked outside of a freight business in the 2500 block of Northwest Parkway and that there are no suspects or witnesses.
