Work closes downtown Glen Ellyn rail crossing

Repair work on the railroad tracks near the downtown Glen Ellyn Metra station began Tuesday and is expected to last until 3 p.m. Thursday.

Union Pacific Railroad officials say the repairs are needed to maintain peak rail performance.

As a result of the work, the Main Street crossing was closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Detours are in place south of the tracks on Hill Avenue and Duane Street and north of the tracks on Pennsylvania Avenue and Crescent Boulevard.

Trains that pass through town while the repairs are taking place will blow their horns, per federal rules, since work is being done on the right of way.
