Suburbia's Got Talent: Shawn Michael Hutchings

In 1994, Shawn Hutchings was 23, teaching guitar and working at Wa-Pa-Ghetti's Pizza in Wheeling when he penned the song "Sometimes".

It was a time in his life when he was trying to find and define himself, trying to figure out who he was and who he wanted to be.

"I remember being in a state of questioning," said Hutchings, who now owns Hutch Music Studio in Lake Zurich and played with several bands during his career. "I was questioning what I thought about the way I was raised, what I believed as far as politics, religion, and just life in general."

He said he spent a lot of time talking with people of various ages, races, creeds and backgrounds to see if they had more of a clue. He got a lot of different answers.

Many of his days were spent in the park, in silence, contemplating many of the questions that "Sometimes" addresses, he said.

Hutchings calls it one of the most metaphysical and spiritual songs he has ever written.

Seventeen years later, he says, the song still speaks to him.
