Police arrest 271 at Little 500 at Indiana U.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Most of the 271 people arrested in the Bloomington area during Indiana University’s Little 500 weekend will qualify for a pre-trial diversion program and dismissal of charges against them.

The Herald-Times reports the total arrests are about 50 more than last year.

Most qualified to have their charges dismissed in return for a day of community service, alcohol classes and a fee of about $425. It says they were scheduled to pick up trash Sunday after a moment of silence for 20-year-old IU student Linden Whitt of Mishawaka. Whitt died Saturday after falling from a balcony at a party early Friday.

About 30 of those arrested did not qualify for diversion.

An Indiana State Excise Police spokesman says officers issued 258 tickets, nearly 100 more than last year.
