Blame fiscal woes on a loss of morals
I am a faithful reader of the Herald and especially like the editorial page. While I missed your March 4 editorial (Our View — Primary 2012) I am writing to say that I very much agree with the letter by William C. Ross of Mount Prospect which was published March 23 in the Fence Post.
So many times I have heard people say that one can’t “turn back the clock.” As C.S. Lewis wrote, when the clock is wrong the only thing one can do is to reset it.
Our corrupt state government has Illinois in a state of fiscal disaster. Illinois is unable to pay the bills for services already rendered, has raised taxes which discourage both individuals and businesses, and has struck “deals” with certain employers for tax breaks in response to threats to leave the state. Furthermore, the “business as usual” corruption of Chicago, Cook County and Illinois has been imported to Washington, D.C., and our nation faces record spending financed by debt purchased by other countries and backed by an ever more worthless dollar.
When one becomes lost in a thicket, there is only one thing left to do: go back until one finds familiar landmarks that make sense and continue from there. This not only requires that we find our fiscal bearings but our moral bearings as well!
It is well past time to cease building our house on sand and seek the foundation of truth.
