Chicago pastor plans anti-violence trek
A Chicago pastor who camped on the roof of an abandoned motel for three months to draw attention to gun violence has a new plan.
The Rev. Corey Brooks says he’ll set out on a three-month walk on June 5. The goal is to raise $15 million for the community center he wants to build on the site of the motel, which had become a haven for prostitution and drug dealing on Chicago’s South Side. He’ll announce the details Sunday.
Through his rooftop vigil this winter, Brooks raised enough money to buy the property and tear down the motel. The money included a $100,000 donation from movie mogul Tyler Perry.
Brooks said he was driven to act after presiding over 10 funerals last year for slain young men.
