Arlington Heights man convicted of evading gas tax

The owner of a Northwest suburban gas station has been convicted on 16 counts of filing fraudulent sales and use tax returns.

Todd Antenore, owner of Arlington Heights Citgo in the 2100 block of Arlington Heights Road, underreported sales tax in the amount of $336,099 from November 2008 to February 2010, prosecutors said.

He was sentenced to 30 months probation and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

Antenore was charged as part of an ongoing investigation between the Illinois Department of Revenue and the Office of the Illinois Attorney General begun in 2008. The investigation has targeted station owners who failed to pay gasoline sales taxes owed to the state.

Since 2009, the state has collected $67 million in unpaid sales taxes from gas station owners, said a spokeswoman from the Attorney General’s Office.
