Round Lake house destroyed by fire caused by lightning strike
No one was injured in a fire that started when a home in Round Lake was struck by lightning, officials said.
Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Fire Marshall Doug Zeigler said lightning struck the two-story house in the 100 block of Wildflower Lane about 7:15 a.m. Sunday. It sent electricity through a wood-and-metal-lined chimney and sparked fires within.
Zeigler said fires started between the walls in the first floor family room and on the second floor.
The fire was spotted by a neighbor, who called the fire protection district. The homeowners were alerted by a smoke detector and had already escaped outside, Zeigler said.
The home suffered an estimated $125,000 in damage from fire, smoke and water, he said.
The home has been deemed uninhabitable, Zeigler said, and the fire remains under investigation.
