Apparent intruder fatally shot in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Police in Fort Wayne say an apartment resident fatally shot a man who the resident told officers had kicked in the door to the home.

City police spokesman Officer John Chambers tells The Journal Gazette that the resident said the intruder had a handgun when he burst into the first-floor apartment in a complex on the city’s east side Thursday night.

Chambers says the resident shot the man, who then ran away for a short distance before collapsing. He died shortly after being taken to a hospital.

Chambers tells WANE-TV that the apartment resident had the legal rights to shoot the man if the person was acting in self-defense.
