Kane judge gives Chicago man 7 years for DUI

A 35-year-old man with a long history of traffic offenses, including 25 arrests for driving while his license was revoked or suspended, was sentenced this week to seven years in prison for a summer 2010 DUI.

Paul H. Woodard, whose last address was the 8100 block of South Vincennes Avenue, Chicago, was sentenced by Kane County Judge Marmarie Kostelny after Woodard pleaded guilty in February to aggravated driving while license revoked and aggravated DUI, both felonies.

Woodard was arrested June 2, 2010, in Montgomery after he was clocked going 44 mph in a 30 mph zone, according to a police report and court documents. Woodard fled on foot after pulling over and officers found open alcohol and other alcohol containers in his Chrysler sedan.

Authorities said Woodard had been arrested 25 times since 1995 for driving on a suspended or revoked license.

Woodard also was eligible for an extended sentence because he did eight previous prison terms for felony convictions involving weapons, drugs and battery.

Under state law, he can have his sentence halved for good behavior while in prison, and also gets credit for 315 days spent in the Kane County jail while his case was pending.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Whitfield prosecuted the case.
