Naperville man charged with possessing pipe bombs

A Naperville man is free on bond after being charged by police with possession of three pipe bombs and other weapons, authorities said Wednesday.

Joseph M. Schwab, 33, pleaded not guilty to two counts of possession of explosives or incendiary devices and one count of domestic battery following an altercation at his home in the 800 block of Plainfield/Naperville Road, Naperville Sgt. Gregg Bell said.

Police were called to the home about 8:05 p.m. March 18 after a family member allegedly was pushed by Schwab.

Police said Schwab was loading guns into his vehicle when they arrived and officers detained him while the home was searched.

The search turned up three pipe bombs, 21 firearms and 43 other edged weapons, Bell said. The other weapons included swords, knives and martial arts weapons.

He said the DuPage County bomb squad was called to confiscate the pipe bombs.

Schwab appeared before a judge in March and posted bond, Bell said.

He returned to court April 5, where he entered the not guilty plea, Bell said.

Schwab is due back in DuPage County court on May 15.
