Elk Grove Village man dead following three-hour police stand off

A 27-year-old man was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his Elk Grove Village apartment, thus ending an armed stand off with police late Tuesday night.

Elk Grove Village Police officials said through a news release Wednesday morning that they were called to an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Charlela Lane at about 5:03 p.m. to conduct a well being check.

Officers spent more than three hours trying to contact the unidentified man inside the apartment, but were unable to reach him.

At about 8:45, officers heard a single gun shot ring out, they made entry and found the man dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:46 p.m.

Police are not releasing the man's name and said the incident remains under investigation.

Officials said no one else was inside the home and that area residents are safe.
