Mt. Prospect man sues after missing FBI’s push-up requirement

A Mount Prospect man who was kicked out of the FBI’s special agents training because he could do only 29 of the required 30 push-ups has filed a lawsuit claiming the physical test discriminates against men. Jay Bauer completed more than 20 weeks of training, passed firearms and academic tests but missed the mark by 1 push-up. The lawsuit claims the test intentionally ignored data that indicated the 14 required push-ups for women were comparatively easier than the 30 for men. Full story.

Huntley trustee arrested over spat

A Huntley trustee faces two misdemeanor charges over a spat with a Huntley pub owner involving text messages and an ex-girlfriend. Police got a call from Trustee Nick Hanson in late 2011 that Jeff Lovell was near his house and was sending harassing text messages to him. Officers ordered Hanson not to step foot in Lovell’s bar, Parkside Pub, and for the two to stop texting each other. Hanson was arrested on charges that he defied the bar ban and texted Lovell. Prosecutors say Wheaton murder suspect hid his income

A Wheaton murder suspect could lose his free legal representation and face additional charges after prosecutors revealed he had been quietly collecting checks from the government for three years. Michael Delaney was assigned a public defender at his first hearing after the stabbing death of Michael Scalzo, 40, of Wheaton, but never filled out a sworn affidavit stating his income, according to prosecutors. Delaney has a monthly income of $1,290 from veterans benefits and $778 in social security. Full story.

Palatine sues former councilman

Palatine filed a lawsuit against a former councilman who once ran for mayor, claiming he and his wife have 10 ordinance violations on their property including deep trenches and sandbags. Warren Kostka, whose home has a banner that reads, “WANT WATER? Buy A Home In Palatine,” said he dug trenches and put 8 tons of sandbags on the property to prevent flooding that began when Palatine disconnected its combined sewer system. “They’ve destroyed my property and now they want me to fix it,” he said. Naperville gets ‘family-friendly’ restaurant at former Show-Me’s

A new Naperville restaurant is set to open in the former spot held by Show-Me’s, 1126 E. Ogden Ave., and the manager is hoping to do so with as little fanfare as possible. Linebacker Grille will have a fine-dining and more family-friendly approach, said General Manager Gary Beckner. “Sure, there was the scandal with the servers’ outfits and things like that,” he said. “But anyone that ever went to Show-Me’s knows it failed because the service was poor and the food was subpar. Deer culling upheld by five votes

A resident-led attempt to end deer culling in a portion of Dundee Township failed by five votes Tuesday night. That means shooting deer and testing them for chronic wasting disease will continue. The only way to test for the disease is to kill the animal. Full story.

Fire destroys 2 Elgin garages, damages 3 homes

Elgin fire officials continue to investigate an blaze that destroyed two unattached garages early last night and damaged three homes. The fire broke out about 5:30 p.m. on the 600 block of Cleveland Avenue inside or near the garage and spread to a second garage and the rear of one of the homes. Two other homes sustained heat damage to their siding, officials said. No one was injured. Full story.

Traffic

Numerous accidents are sprouting up during rush hour this morning. Route 14 and Cuba Road has been shut down in both directions due to a crash, while two lanes of inbound I-55 near Route 53 have been closed due to a second crash. People should also be prepared to see brake lights at Lake Cook Road between Wilmot Road and Pfingsten Road in Deerfield. People can expect periodic daytime lane closures due to roadwork slated to take place through May 11. Full story.

Urlacher praises new GM while accepting award

While being honored with the Ed Block Courage Award at Maryville Academy yesterday, Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher voiced his praise for newly hired general manager Phil Emery. “On paper we’re a better football team than we were last year at the end of the season,” Urlacher said. “Now we just have to go out there and do it. Hamilton leads Bulls past Knicks, 98-86

With Derrick Rose on the bench with a sprained right ankle, Richard Hamilton scored 18 of his 20 points in the third quarter while hitting 6 of 10 shots from the field. He also collected 5 assists in the game. Full story.

Cubs lose again

Tuesday’s outing was one starting pitcher Paul Maholm definitely would like to forget. Making his Cubs debut, Maholm threw 41 pitches in a torturous first inning, when the Brewers scored 5 runs and sent 10 men to the plate. Alex Gonzalez hit a 3-run homer during an inning when Maholm walked two batters and hit two. Maholm was done after 4 innings as he gave up 6 hits and 6 runs, and pushed the Cubs to another loss by a final of 7-4. Full story.
