Get trained as a lifeguard now
Submitted by Taylor Family YMCA
The time to train for a summer lifeguarding gig in now — not when summer starts.
“Once school lets out we get all kinds of calls about lifeguard training. By then, it’s too late. If you want to lifeguard this summer, the time to get trained is now,” said Laura Rudie, health enhancement/aquatics director for the Taylor Family YMCA, 50 N. McLean in Elgin.
Taylor Y will host two American Red Cross training sessions this spring. Spring I is scheduled to start April 16 and conclude May 11. Classes will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Students must attend all classes. No exceptions will be entertained.
To register for this class, you must be 15 years of age or older by May 11.
Participants in the Spring 2 session must be 15 by May 20. Classes will be held from noon to 8 p.m. May 12; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 13; noon to 8 p.m. May 19; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 20. Again, all classes must be attended.
Both sessions will incorporate the most up-to-date lifeguarding skills, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and use of the automated defibrillator as well as basic first aid. The fee for YMCA members is $200 and includes a participant’s manual as well as tips for securing a life-guarding job.
Registration is under way. For more information, call the Taylor Family YMCA at (847) 888-7410.
