Wrong way driver arrested on Kennedy Expressway

A Chicago man drove the wrong way on Interstate 90 early for about 10 miles while drunk early Tuesday, and was stopped before anyone was injured, according to police.

District Chicago State Police contacted tollway district troopers at about 4 a.m. reporting that a vehicle was headed westbound in the eastbound lanes on I-90 near Nagle Avenue in Chicago.

An Illinois Department of Transportation maintenance truck working at Busse Road at the Jane Adams Memorial Tollway spotted the van and flipped on its yellow hazard lights, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Mark Pilgrim said. The vehicle pulled over for the lights and police quickly descended on the scene, officials said.

“Nobody was struck, no crash,” Master Sgt. Chadd Brody said. “We are very fortunate that one of our maintenance crews was right there.”

Officers administered a field sobriety test on the driver, which he failed, police said.

Michael A. Glomski, 54, of the 4500 block of N. Mobile Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane usage, Brody said.

Police said Glomski’s blood alcohol level was one and a half times the legal limit.

“It’s lucky it wasn’t much worse,” Pilgrim said.

No one was injured in the incident, he said.

Glomski posted $3,000 bail and surrendered his license and was released. He is due in court May 18.
